Getting a Diagnosis of Dementia

Getting a Diagnosis of Dementia

Concerned about your memory?
  1. An important first step is to visit your GP. This gives you an opportunity to talk about your concerns. It is important to look at all possible causes for your symptoms as there are other conditions that can at first look like dementia but are not. A memory screening test and blood tests may be performed at this point. Your GP may also refer you to a hospital based consultant or the local Memory Clinic which is based in St Patrick's Hospital, Cashel.
  2. The memory clinic provides specialist assessment which includes medical history, detailed cognitive examination, blood tests and CT scan of Brain. When attending the memory clinic it is recommended that you bring a family member who can provide any additional information that can help inform the diagnosis.

Reasons for getting a diagnosis
  1. Getting a diagnosis can help you and your family understand the changes you are experiencing and find out what can help.
  2. Although there is no cure for dementia, a diagnosis will give you access to drug treatment which may improve your symptoms or may help slow progression. It also gives you access to local services and supports.
  3. Getting an early diagnosis can help you stay well for longer by increasing your awareness of the condition and helping you make adjustments and develop strategies that can help.
  4. It provides an opportunity to look at important issues such as finances, legal issues and making plans for the future.
